Chapter 20
Birds, Birds, Birds!
(Originally posted August 2nd, 2012)
Since we were already in Asia, we decided to take a walk along the Maharajah Jungle Trek.
We got to see these little beauties.
I’ll be honest—I don’t know why people are so afraid of bats. They’re really cute! Obviously out in the world you don’t want to come into contact with one because of rabies and all that, but in a controlled environment, they’re just really interesting. And the ones they have on the Jungle Trek are HUGE! Anyway, we’re very pro-bat. We’re also very pro-tiger. Though who isn’t?
It’s so sad that there are only about 1000 left in the wild.
The aviary section of the trek is fun too. Lots of weird birds.
Speaking of birds, that is precisely where we were heading after we finished trekking through Maharajah. We’re both big bird lovers (pretty much all animals in general, if you hadn’t gotten that yet), but we had never taken the time out to see Flights of Wonder. We queued up for the 2:00 show and were thrilled when this guy came out for the pre-show.
This show was FUN! Talk about one of the hidden gems of Animal Kingdom. We got to see some really cool rare birds, and they have a parrot who can sing songs! Who could ask for anything more?
We have been watching the bald eagle webcam on Ustream for the last several months which followed a family of baby bald eagles from egg to flight. We were, therefore, excited to see a full grown bald eagle in person.
These guys were neat too.
After Flights of Wonder, we were left with a bit of a quandary. We had ridden everything we were really keen on riding in Animal Kingdom, and we had just sat through one show. I should say that I LOVE Finding Nemo: The Musical. I think it is one of the best attractions in all of Disney and hands down the best stage show. We also enjoyed Festival of the Lion King the one time we saw it. We just couldn’t convince ourselves to stay in the park for the extra hour plus that doing either of these would require. We had other plans for our afternoon and wanted to get to them. So unfortunately, we had to skip out on the Big Blue World and Hakuna Matata until our next trip. We started to make our way toward the front of the park.
We stumbled on the Discovery Island trails and found—what else?—more birds!
I was trying to look like this macaw was resting on my finger. Maybe my forced perspective needs a little work.
Sometimes it’s just fun to look around the Tree of Life at all of the cool animals.
We stopped at a store toward the front of the park and looked around at all the Animal Kingdom-specific merchandise. I wish there were as many park-specific items for all the parks as there are here. Those unique things you can only get in one store or at least in one park are some of the best souvenirs. We bought this bowl hoping we could pair it up with a similar one from Epcot or something. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything like it anywhere else…
Continuing our walk toward the park exit, we stopped for a few Photopass pictures.
The other magic shot some of the photographers were willing to do on this trip was balloons!
Right by the entrance there were black swans. They’re creepy.
We stopped by Guest Relations and they were glad we reported Alex’s excellent job at Kilimanjaro Safaris. Filling out one of those cards or sending an email after your trip really is so important so the cast members who make magic for us in Disney can get a little magic of their own. We were assured our comments would go in his file.
We bade a final farewell to Animal Kingdom.
This time we got on a Riverside bus, and before long we were on our way back to our resort. We needed to get ready for the next thing, as our day was far from over.
