Where Did I Leave My Heart? – January 2014 San Francisco Trip Report

Since Tracy works at a company that’s still pretty small, they are committed to giving their employees as many opportunities for career development as possible. And though her responsibilities at CoolTech have shifted significantly over the last year or so, one of Tracy’s focuses at the beginning of 2014 was how to use social media for recruiting. So when a conference came up in January that focused on this exact topic, she had no issues pitching her attendance to her boss. The major advantage for us, however, was that the conference was in San Francisco—which gave us an opportunity to visit someplace that we had been wanting to go for years.

With our room and board covered throughout the length of the conference, we made arrangements to stay in the city for an extra day so that we could do some exploring. Of course, our number one must-do in San Francisco was going to be the Walt Disney Family Museum, but there are plenty of other (gasp) non-Disney-related things we wanted to do as well.

Our trip would last from January 27th-February 1st. Now, I know that I’ve said in the past that I wasn’t really going to write about the awful first few months of 2014, but this trip was certainly the high point among all the crap, and I’m looking forward to sharing a few stories. We fell in love with San Francisco, and it’s already high up on our list of places we need to visit again—but more on that later.

I had never been to Northern California, but Tracy had gone to San Francisco with her family when she was younger. Still, this would be the first time either of us were truly able to appreciate the place as adults. We booked a one-bedroom apartment on Telegraph Hill through AirBNB, which was significantly cheaper than any of the hotels in the area. Both the owner and his property manager were very easy to communicate with, and we felt like our first experience with the vacation rental site was going to be a positive one.

With everything all booked, we packed our bags the night before we were set to travel northward.
