Our first full day in San Francisco was also a full workday. I can’t pretend we got to the CoolTech co-working space right on time in the morning because we had to figure out public transportation over there, but we were determined to arrive by lunchtime. The coolest perk of this building, by far, was that it had a private chef who would prepare lunch for everyone daily. It was pretty tasty!

After a full afternoon of working, we headed out with plans to meet up with another of Tracy’s coworkers, named Tim, for dinner after he finished a late meeting. To kill time, we made our way toward Union Square to do some window shopping. Of course, our internal beacons led us straight toward the giant Disney Store location nearby.

It reminded us a lot of the Times Square store we would often check out while we were living in NYC.

Somehow they hooked us with all this San Francisco-specific merchandise, even though the city has almost nothing to do with Disney (the museum excluded). We had to buy several items.

Tracy ended up with an “I Left My Shoe in San Francisco,” Cinderella-themed shirt, and we also got a frame, Vinylmation, and pin. It still wasn’t quite time to meet up with Tim, so we wandered over to the actual Union Square next and took a few pictures. Tracy remarked that the last time she had visited San Francisco had been during the summer and this area was hopping. Since this was a random day in January, however, it was basically deserted.

Every time I see an obelisk, my immediate reaction is to call it a basilisk. Guess I’ve read a little too much Harry Potter in my day.

Giant Macy’s storefront.

There’s nothing too exciting about the stores prominently located here. They are pretty much just your standard brands…

I got Tracy to take my picture in front of the obelisk (or basilisk, if you prefer).

As we rounded a corner, we happened to see one of the historic San Francisco cable cars making its way toward its stop.

We were, of course, planning to ride one of these a little later in the trip, but it was still fun to see one in action even though we weren’t going to board.

Here’s a photo of Tracy and me with absolutely nothing interesting in the background.

Finally it was dinnertime, but our plans didn’t end up working out like we’d hoped. The Chinese place Tim wanted to take us to happened to be closed on Tuesdays, so it was out. And he had only moved to San Francisco about a month or two before our visit, so he wasn’t that familiar with the best places to go.

We all turned to Yelp! and Foursquare to give us tips on good restaurants in the neighborhood, and we finally settled on a relatively upscale Italian place that was supposed to have really good pizza. Everything we got was delicious, but I can’t remember very many details (I don’t even know what the restaurant was called!). After about two hours, though, we parted ways as Tim went back home and Tracy and I continued our late night tour of the city.
