Chapter 6
Grim Grinning Dans

As we walked into Frontierland, we passed by this scarecrow character who was spouting off one-liners from his spot atop a pole.

We also saw the good old Halloween Tree.

I feel like there were more of these ghosts around at the party this year as compared to the last time we’d come.

One of our favorite sights at the last party had been the Rivers of America shrouded in fog. I think it’s a really cool effect.

Now, the main reason why we had come over to this side of the park was (of course) to see the talented Cadaver Dans. They had been one of our favorite parts of our first Halloween Party, and I would consider their show an absolute “must-see.”

I was clearly excited for them to come out.

I think they actually started a little bit late, but we soon saw this ghostly raft gliding toward us and began hearing the Halloween tunes.

We had accidentally parked ourselves a bit too far to the right, so the raft stopped its forward motion a little shy of us.

Luckily, we were still able to see well as we walked a little further left.

It’s hard to capture just how cool this show is, but I took several pictures and a few videos to do my best.

I love that there is enough Halloween music to fill an entire set (though I guess a few songs were just rewritten a bit to make them more seasonal). Obviously, the Dans rely heavily on tunes from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but we enjoy those songs, so we didn’t mind.

After the raft had faded back into the fog at the end of the performance, we continued walking into New Orleans Square. We’d gotten a DAS time for Haunted Mansion Holiday before the party had even started, and now seemed like a good time to use it.

This was our first time seeing the Mansion overlay this year, so we were on the lookout for any new changes.

I have to admit once again that I really love this overlay. We’ve seen it during three different Halloween seasons now (2011, 2013, and 2014), and it never disappoints. I noticed fewer additions this year than we had the year before—they had definitely done a lot for the 13th anniversary of the overlay—but it was still so much fun. From the “la la la” chorus as you walk in until little Sally waving goodbye on the way out, everything is very impressive.

Frontierland was certainly starting to feel a little more crowded as we walked back in that direction after the ride. They had once again decorated Rancho del Zocalo as a unique Treat Trail, but it didn’t feature characters this time like it had the previous year.

For some reason, I really liked this ghost projection on the side of one of the Frontierland buildings. I think it reminded me of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

It felt a little like the night was flying by, and we realized that it was basically already time for us to start camping out for the fireworks. We had loved our viewing location right in front of the castle the previous year, and we were determined to beat the crowds and try to end up in a similar spot tonight. We arrived with about 45 minutes to spare and snagged places with a really good view.
